Have you ever looked at the laundry tags tucked inside your shirts and wondered what the symbols meant? These symbols tell us how to properly wash, dry, and iron our clothes so that they can work as intended for as long as possible. If you ignore these instructions, you risk destroying the material, fading the colors sooner, or shrinking the garment sooner than expected. But this doesn't have to be the case. Laundry Tag Symbols Guide

You'll normally find three main categories on clothing care tags: one for washing, one for drying, and one for ironing, and under each main category are more specific instructions. The main categories can also be marked with X's to indicate what you shouldn't do the garment, while the dots inside icons usually indicate levels of temperature you should wash, press, or dry the clothes.

The icon that looks like a tub is for washing, and variations of the tub icon may indicate the intensity of cycle, water temperature, whether you should handwash, use a washing machine, or not wash it at all. The symbols for washing usually sit next to triangle icons which pertain to varying degrees of bleach - from zero to high chlorine.

The combination of squares and circles with a circle inside refer to drying instructions, and the number of dots inside the sole circle refer to the dryer temperature.

The flat iron icons refer to ironing and steaming instructions and they indicate levels of heat too.
